XR Labs at Motlow
Motlow College Libraries have laboratories with devices and computers for faculty and students to use and develop virtual, mixed, and augmented reality software. Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) are all forms of extended reality (XR). VR headsets along with controllers or hand gestures recognized by motion capture allow users to experience different environments, perform tasks modeled after real situations, or even play games. AR and MR devices overlay virtual objects in the real environment through either viewfinders on cameras or wearable devices. All XR devices can enhance learning by providing users with immersive, tailored environments and hands-on virtual instruction.
All Motlow libraries are equipped with virtual reality workstations and headsets. Moore County and Smyrna libraries have dedicated labs with up to ten VR-ready workstations with Rift S headsets as well as standalone Quest and Quest 2 headsets available for student use. Visit the circulation desk of any library to check out an Oculus Quest headset or to book time on an Alienware workstation equipped with a Rift S. Check back soon for new capabilities and equipment as we are actively expanding XR lab holdings and services.
