What is the Writing Center?

The Writing Center is a free service available to the entire Motlow community. We are a team of dedicated student tutors willing to work with their peers to guide them to academic success! Whether you are having difficulty with an English paper, lab report, or cover letter for a job application, the MSCC Writing Center is here to help!

Where is it Located?

The Writing Center offers eTutoring in addition to on-ground tutoring. Face-face meetings with tutors are held in Fayetteville (Library), McMinnville (Library), Moore County (Crouch Hall, rooms 1035-1046), and Smyrna (HSC 359).

Hours and Appointments

At the beginning of each semester, our tutors will have their class and work schedules completed. Keep an eye out for fliers around campus that display the hours of your Writing Center for the semester. Walk-ins are allowed, but must be done during a time when a tutor is not mentoring a student, in person or online.

What You Can Expect

Expect each tutoring session to last about 50 minutes, rather than an hour. Additionally you can expect to be welcomed and listened to by your tutor, who will do their best to steer you in the right direction for your writing. For appointments to go smoothly with as little confusion as possible, please come prepared with your rough draft or brainstorm notes, your rubric/prompt for your assignment, and a pen & notepad for notes (this can also be done electronically).

How can I become a tutor?

Writing Center peer tutors work one-on-one with students on all four Motlow campuses and online. Tutors assist students with writing at any level, in any discipline, and at any stage in the writing process. Whether they are helping students to understand an assignment, conduct research, make a revision plan, review grammar rules, or master a documentation style (MLA, APA, etc.), tutors will help students to develop the skills necessary for successful academic writing. Other duties include presenting informational classroom visits, maintaining tutoring records, and contributing to the Writing Center’s bank of online resources. Most tutors work 6 hours per week and are expected to attend periodic staff meetings throughout the semester.

General requirements: Students must have a grade of B or higher in English 1010 and/or 1020 and possess excellent writing skills. In addition, students should be patient, work well with their peers, and be continuously willing to learn from their tutoring experiences. All new tutors participate in mandatory paid training.
