    • Abstract:
      civil rights leader who led protests against racial discrimination in Montgomery, Alabama, for fifty years. Born in 1899, Edgar Daniel “Ed” Nixon was the fifth of eight children. His father, Wesley M. Nixon, was a tenant farmer in Autauga County, Alabama, and was an untrained circuit-riding Primitive Baptist minister. After Ed's mother died, his father's remarriage brought nine more children into the family. Young Ed left elementary school to work, and at age twenty-five he joined the Pullman Company. Soon after, he organized the first Alabama local of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), becoming president of the Montgomery division in 1937. Nixon's employment with the Chicago-based company, along with his union membership, protected him from the economic reprisals that many other black activists experienced. He idolized A.
