D2L Media (Kaltura)

Information icon  Kaltura is an online video platform that has been seamlessly integrated into D2L Brightspace.

Throughout your D2L course, you can enrich your course materials with video and audio files for a more engaging experience for you and your students.

There are two ways to record media: Express Capture and Kaltura Capture.

  • Record video from a webcam and/or audio from a microphone
  • Record your computer desktop screen, video from a webcam, and/or audio from a microphone.

  • Automatic slide detection if PowerPoint presentation is screen captured.

  • Record directly within your browser (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). No software installation needed.
  • Software installation is required (first time only).

How to record with Express Capture

Kaltura Express Capture enables recording content directly from the browser without the need to install any additional software.

  1. In your D2L course, click on Media on the navbar.

  2. Choose My Media.
    Your media collection will appear. Click the Add New button.

  3. Select Express Capture.
    The “Record Media” page will be displayed.

  4. (Optional) Set the Camera or Audio Settings. The default settings are your personal computer's webcam and audio device.

    • Click the Settings icon to select the source camera (if you have multiple cameras) or audio device (if you have multiple audio devices) and to turn the camera/audio on/off.

    • Both the camera and audio may not be turned off at the same time.

  5. Click the Record button (red circle) to begin your recording. A three second countdown window is displayed.

  6. A timer will be displayed while you are recording. To end, click the Stop button next to the timer.

  7. Review the recording. If needed, click the Record Again button to discard the recording and create a new one.

  8. (Optionally) select the Download a Copy to download the recording to your device.

  9. Once you are satisfied with the recording, click the Use This button to finish and upload to Kaltura/D2L.

  10. While the media is being uploaded, provide a name for the recording.
    Note:  It is recommended that you include your course title and the recording’s subject matter as part of the name. Additionally, enter a description and keyword tags for the recording. This will assist you in searching for and locating the recording as your My Media collection grows.

  11. Click the blue Save button to save changes to the media name and details.

  12. Click Go To My Media to return to your full media collection.

How to record with Kaltura Capture

Kaltura Captures provides more features than Express Capture, including the ability to record a computer desktop.

  1. In your D2L course, click on Media on the navbar.

  2. Choose My Media.
    Your media collection will appear. Click the Add New button.

  3. Select Kaltura Capture.

  4. The Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder information window will appear. If you have previously installed Kaltura Capture, it will start automatically.

If using for the first time, click the link to Download for Windows or Download for Mac depending upon the device you are using.

  • Windows installation

    • Double click on the downloaded “KalturaCapture_NNN.msi” file. The Kaltura Capture Setup screen is displayed.

    • Follow the setup wizard and click the Next button when prompted.

    • Click the Finish button to complete the installation.

  • Mac installation

    • Click to download the .dmg file.

    • Double-click the file to open it.

    • Drag the Kaltura Capture icon to the Applications folder.

Once the Kaltura Capture software has been installed, repeat the steps 1-4 to navigate back to your My Media collection and select Kaltura Capture from the “Add New” menu. 

How to publish media using "Insert Stuff"

Media can be added anywhere in D2L that uses the text editor. For instance, media can be inserted into an announcement, instructions for an assignment (or discussion or quiz), description of a content module, within a file created in D2L, and even a quiz question.

Additionally, students can insert media into discussion posts, assignment text submissions, and written response quiz questions.

  1. In the D2L text editor, click the Insert Stuff icon on the toolbar.

  2. Select Insert My Media.

  3. Your Kaltura My Media collection will appear.

  4. Locate the media (video or audio file) you want to insert.

  5. Click the </> Embed button to the right of the video.

  6. The video will be inserted into the text editor.

Publish media to a course Media Gallery

Each course has its own Media Gallery. An instructor can publish media (audio or video) to one or more galleries.

  1. Click on Media on the course navbar.

  2. Select My Media. 

  3. Locate the media within the My Media Collection. 

  4. Place a checkmark to the left of one or more media.

  5. Click the Actions drop-down menu.

  6. Select Publish.

  8. Media will be placed into the Media Gallery.

  9. To access the course Media Gallery:

    • Access the course.

    • Click on Media in the course navbar.

    • Select Media Gallery.
